The AIFMRM team consists of academic and professional experts, who have a wealth of experience in mathematical finance, risk management, economics, financial regulation, economic policy and general finance.

  • Associate Professor David Taylor

    Director of AIFMRM

    Prof David Taylor is the founding Director of AIFMRM. He previously held a position at the University of the Witwatersrand where he ran the successful Programme in Advanced Mathematics of Finance for 15 years. Prof Taylor is also the Director of the African Collaboration for Quantitative Finance and Risk Research (ACQuFRR), AIFMRM’s research unit. In his spare time he is the Convenor of the MPhil in Mathematical Finance. He specialises in the fields of financial modelling and derivative pricing.

  • Associate Professor Peter Ouwehand

    Associate Professor

    Prof Peter Ouwehand is a mathematician who teaches on both the MPhil in Mathematical Finance and the MCom in Risk Management of Financial Markets. In addition, he is an advisory member of the African Collaboration for Quantitative Finance and Risk Research (ACQuFRR). His research interests focus on applications of stochastic analysis to finance, including the pricing and hedging of financial derivatives, as well as model uncertainty and model risk management.

  • Dr Co-Pierre Georg

    Senior Lecturer

    Dr Co-Pierre Georg is a Senior Lecturer and the Convenor of the MCom in Risk Management of Financial Markets. He previously held a position at the UCT Graduate School of Business, and holds a part-time appointment at Deutsche Bundesbank as a Research Economist in banking supervision and regulation. Dr Georg is the Deputy Director of the African Collaboration for Quantitative Finance and Risk Research (ACQuFRR). His expertise in general, but particularly in the area of financial regulation, is a key asset to the Institute.

  • Obeid Mahomed

    Lecturer

    Obeid Mahomed is a Lecturer who teaches on both the MPhil in Mathematical Finance and the MCom in Risk Management of Financial Markets. He is also an advisory member of the African Collaboration for Quantitative Finance and Risk Research (ACQuFRR). Previous to this, he was employed on a full-time basis within the financial sector, with extensive exposure to banking, asset management, insurance and stock broking. Obeid's roles evolved from Quantitative Analyst to Head of Quantitative Research, within the investment and stock-broking industries, and then to Senior Risk Manager at one of South Africa’s largest banks. His research interests are in the fields of financial mathematics, risk management, financial economics and empirical finance.

  • Associate Professor Thomas McWalter

    Adjunct Associate Professor

    Prof Tom McWalter is an applied mathematician who teaches numerical methods on the MPhil in Mathematical Finance. In addition, he is an executive member of the African Collaboration for Quantitative Finance and Risk Research (ACQuFRR). His research interests include numerical methods in finance, modeling of derivative instruments and stochastic optimal control.

  • Dr Abhik Mukherjee

    Senior Lecturer

    Dr Abhik Mukherjee joined AIFMRM as a Senior Lecturer in March 2017. Abhik teaches on the MCom in Risk Management of Financial Markets. Additionally, he is an advisory member of the African Collaboration for Quantitative Finance and Risk Research (ACQuFRR). His research interests include banking, macroeconomics, financial economics, monetary policy and corporate finance.

  • Associate Professor Tanja Tippett

    Adjunct Associate Professor

    Prof Tanja Tippett is an applied mathematician who teaches on the MCom in Risk Management of Financial Markets. Tanja has extensive industry experience in asset management and insurance, specialising in asset-liability matching, risk management, credit risk management and fixed income strategies.

  • Lizzy Starck

    Administrative Officer

    Lizzy Starck joined AIFMRM as an Administrative Officer in April 2016. She has 20 years administrative experience specialising in office management and procurement. Lizzy has been employed at UCT for the past five years where she’s had varied roles dealing with finance, external relationship management, and undergraduate and postgraduate student administration.

  • Lameez Fakier

    Administrative Officer

    Lameez Fakier has been with the Institute since its launch in January 2014. She has experience in institutional and financial administration and comes from a sales, marketing and client liaison background which spans 18 years. Lameez functions as the course coordinator for AIFMRM and as the administrator for the African Collaboration for Quantitative Finance and Risk Research (ACQuFRR), the Institute's research unit.
